Organ Transplant Anaesthesia and Critical Care

The Department of Organ Transplant Anaesthesia and Critical Care at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, provides perioperative care to the patients for liver, kidney, heart, lung and pancreas transplant. We have a team of skilled anaesthesiologists and critical care physicians specialised in organ transplant who offer 24/7 care to both transplant recipients and donors. Our team works in the operating room and on the postoperative kidney and liver transplant intensive care unit, ensuring the best medical attention possible. Additionally, we actively handle medical emergencies and critical illnesses, such as acute liver failure, acute decompensation of chronic liver disease, and end-stage renal disease in patients.

At our state-of-the-art facilities, we have dedicated four ultramodern operating rooms specifically for transplant surgery. Additionally, we have a 10-bed ICU for liver transplant patients and another 10-bed ICU for kidney transplant patients. These ICUs are equipped with advanced monitors, ventilators, rapid infusion systems, thromboelastography, sonosite, EV1000, HemoSphere, and other necessary equipment.

Our highly skilled doctors have successfully performed over 2000 kidney transplant patients and 100 liver transplant patients at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital. In addition to transplant surgeries, our anesthesiology team provides perioperative care for patients undergoing gastrointestinal and liver surgeries, urology surgeries, endoscopic procedures, pain management, preoperative check-ups, and more.

Our consultants consistently engage in educational activities, such as seminars, case discussions, and journal clubs. They have also successfully organised numerous Continuing Medical Education (CME) events and workshops. Additionally, our faculties are frequently invited to speak at both national and international conferences, and they have contributed to published papers in indexed journals.

The department has received multiple awards from the institute and regional organisations for their outstanding achievements in the field of organ transplant anaesthesia. Most recently, the department has been acknowledged by the National Medical Commission and also granted the accountability to offer two seats for DM in organ transplant anaesthesia and critical care, making it the second institute in India to do so.
